History:

The LMF was opened in 2002 after two years planning and construction. Currently, there are two sites, the first one is located in the first floor of Building C and the second one was opened in 2014, located in the first floor of Building M, at the No.8, the South 3rd Street of Zhongguancun in Beijing. The LMF was designed as a new IOP-based multidisciplinary research centre, purpose-built to enable work at the forefront of science and technology. The lab provide technique service and advice to researchers within IOP and even world-widely. It also train users and holds summer school often, which bridge young researchers with strong capabilities in the underlying disciplines - engineering, physical sciences and biomedicine. The aim of the LMF remains to provide the nanoscience and nanotechnology needed to explore fundamental physic phenomena and effects in low-dimensional structures and novel materials, as well as to solve major problems in information processing, green energy, healthcare and environment.

It was formed as a result of several key academic and scientific considerations in the early stage. These considerations included the gathering of advanced facilities and development of novel fabrication technologies to provide strong support for the construction of new artificial structures and novel devices to explore the underlying physical phenomena and novel physics effects as a scientific theme. In particular it was felt critical mass could only be achieved by consolidating the efforts and resources of disparate facilities and departments.

Organization:

The LMF is owned and run by IOP, CAS. It has nine faculty members, one director, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the lab as a whole. The LMF director works with an Executive Committee, with input from an external Advisory Board that meets approximately annually.

Ethical issues associated with the technology are addressed through the various LMF boards and networks; the LMF welcomes both debate and suggestion.

To provide world-class technological support, the LMF ranks with leading micro-/nano fabrication facilities worldwide. To view the LMF facilities/cleanroom, Management and Organizational details, please use the links below.

Facilities Management and Operations:

A full range of Facilities and Operations Management functions are undertaken within the LMF to ensure that a critical infrastructure is maintained to fully support the needs of the research within IOP and other organizations in China.

The Facilities and Safety are overseen by the LMF staffs that are responsible for:

● Monitoring the proper functioning of plant equipment and building services, environment and safety condition (e.g. lighting, heating, water, sanitary services)
● Ensuring all LMF Lab common areas are equipped with correct furniture and equipment.
● Overseeing the Lab modification and refurbishment projects.
● Planning, organizing and implementing preventive, corrective, proactive maintenance and cost reduction and energy saving programs.
● Monitoring all complaints regarding facilities and making the necessary arrangements to resolve them.
● Organizing and overseeing the cleaning of all cleanroom areas
